Six Historical Sites in Turkey On World’s Most Endangered List
Six Historical Sites in Turkey On World’s Most Endangered List The New York-based World Monuments Fund (WMF) has just released its bi-yearly list of 100 historical hot spots considered most at risk. Five of the sites are in Turkey, and one location belongs to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC).

Included on the “2008 World Monuments Watch List of 100 Most Endangered Sites” were cultural heritage sites in İstanbul, the southeastern city of Hasankeyf, and in the KKTC, the city of Gazimagusa. The WMF is an independent foundation formed in 1965, dedicated to helping protect world cultural heritage locations. WMF President Bonnie Burnham disclosed the list this week, which takes in 100 historical sites from 60 developed and undeveloped countries around the world.

WMF archaeologist Michelle Berenfeld pointed out that she had  continue...

Spectacular Air Show in Golden Horn Skies
Spectacular Air Show in Golden Horn Skies Top pilots of the world staged a spectacular show in the fourth Red Bull Air Race World Series event of the season in Istanbul, Turkey on Saturday June 2, flying through an obstacle course just meters above the Golden Horn estuary that marks the boundary between Europe and Asia. The fourth leg of the competition was a huge spectator event, just like last year with 1.5 million spectators crowding the banks of the Golden Horn.

The exhilarating races were broadcast live on 50 channels across the world, leaving international viewers mesmerized by the beauty of the Golden Horn landscape. The area used to be perhaps one of the most embarrassing and ugliest sites in the city, the water practically invisible due to the fungi floating on the surface, and visitors none too enthralled by the offen continue...

More Rafting Coming To Alanya
More Rafting Coming To Alanya This summer will see more rafting planned for the Köprü and Alara rivers near Alanya, which will secure the Alara River’s place as a must-see destination for tourists interested in rafting and outdoor sports in Turkey. The Alara River also boasts the historic 1,250 year old Ali Köprüsü (Ali Bridge), an attraction which is being introduced at domestic and international tourism trade fairs even now.

In preparation for the fast approaching tourism season, the Alanya Tourism Services Union (ATHB) has been at work beautifying the Ali Bridge, while the Konaklı Municipality and the Güneycik Village Assistance and Cooperation Foundation sponsored a rafting event on the Alara River. In order to symbolize the caravans which once passed over the historic Ali Bri continue...

A Flood Of Water Problems, But Turkey Begins To Find Answers
A Flood Of Water Problems, But Turkey Begins To Find AnswersWater experts from all over the world met in Antalya last week to discuss, among many things, Turkey's water management and the lack of control in this area. The Antalya International River Basin Management Congress also came face-to-face with a problem whose existence was long known but the ramifications of which were not recognized: lack of coordination. Up until now there has been little coordination between the organizations and institutes working with water in the country. So much so that it was only at the last minute that representatives from the Turkish Water Foundation were added to the list of invitees to the congress, meaning that that participants did not fully benefit from this organization, Turkey's first civil society group to tackle the question of water-related problems. < continue...

A Holiday Within a Holiday
A Holiday Within a HolidayWe are a retired couple -- does this mean we are on permanent holiday? It does seem like it.
We have lived in Turkey now for two-and-a-half years. We first came here on holiday to Ölü Deniz, liked the area and moved over. However we hadn’t traveled around at all and although we had seen brochures, etc. of all the other attractions, e.g. Cappadocia, Ephesus, Troy, Pamukkale, we had never been able to visit. Not easy to leave home and go traveling with six cats and two dogs!  However after being visited by friends last summer, they were clamoring to come and house/baby-sit for us while we went away for a few days.

We gave some thought to possible destinations; İstanbul, İzmir, Denizli and Antalya. We had decided against the very “touristy” areas this  continue...
